Sierra Leone on Dipity.
Historical Overview
In 1787, the first group of freed slaves moved to Sierra Leone from Europe as part of a project to return slaves to their homeland. Sierra Leone became a British colony in 1808, and later a protectorate. After gaining its independence in 1961, Sierra Leone was declared a republic. It suffered from much political and economic unrest because of the government instability. The citizens of Sierra Leone became more and more unsettled and displeased with the government, and when it was made a one-party state in 1978, some citizens took action to change it. The Revolutionary United Front was formed and led by Foday Sankoh to rebel against President Joseph Saidu Momoh who had just declared a state of economic emergency. This brutal war lasted a total of 11 years from start to finish, but the damaging effects are still being felt today. The economic instability of Sierra Leone continues to effect the citizens, but now the country is more politically stable. The current president, Ernest Bai Koroma has served for eight years and still has two years left of his second term. Sierra Leone is now a multiparty, constitutional democracy that is continuing to develop.
